Summer skin does not need a bigger routine. It needs a lighter one: a gentle cleanse, water-light hydration, one calming serum, and sunscreen you actually enjoy.

Korean Summer Skincare Routine: Lighter, Calmer, Simpler

The Korean Summer Skincare Routine: Four Steps, Nothing Heavy

Somewhere in late June, my bathroom shelf gets an edit. The cream that carried me through February starts to feel like wearing a coat indoors. By eleven in the morning my forehead has a shine I did not apply, by evening there is a film of sunscreen, sweat and city on my face, and by Friday there is a small congested reminder of all of it along my jaw. And still, strangely, my skin feels tight after cleansing.

If your summer skin is doing the same contradictory thing, oily and thirsty at once, the fix is not a stronger routine. It is a lighter one. This is the four-step version I actually follow, and the reasoning behind each step.

Why summer changes your skin

Heat changes the numbers. Sebaceous glands respond directly to temperature, and older dermatology research estimated that sebum production climbs by roughly ten percent for every degree the temperature rises. The midday shine is not your skin misbehaving. It is your skin responding, on schedule.

Everything else piles on top. Sweat mixes with that extra sebum and the day's sunscreen into a fine film that settles into pores, which is where the end-of-week congestion comes from. UV exposure is at its yearly peak. And, quietly, air-conditioning dries indoor air the way central heating does in January, pulling water out of skin while the weather convinces you hydration is a winter subject.

The classic mistake is to declare war on the oil. A hot shower and a harsh foaming cleanser strip the shine off beautifully for about an hour, along with the lipids your barrier is built from. Skin reads that as an emergency, and an emergency never answers with less oil. It answers with irritation, water loss and more shine, which invites more scrubbing, and the spiral is underway. I wrote about the mechanics of that spiral in how to repair a damaged skin barrier, and summer is its prime season.

The Korean approach to summer runs the other way. Not less care, less weight. The same principles as always, gentle cleansing, real hydration, daily protection, delivered in textures that feel like almost nothing at thirty degrees.

Step one: cleanse without the squeak

Evenings start with the Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser by Beauty of Joseon, a low pH gel with a soft foam, built on green plum water. It takes off the sunscreen-and-sweat film without leaving the squeaky finish, because squeak is not clean. Squeak is stripped, and stripped skin spends the next day overcompensating.

In the morning, lukewarm water or the lightest pass of the same cleanser is enough. If you wore makeup or a water-resistant sport sunscreen, add an oil cleanse first. On an ordinary day with a daily sunscreen, one thorough gentle cleanse does the job.

Step two: rehydrate with water, not weight

Hydration is the step oily skin skips first and needs most. Skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time, and in summer it usually is: the oil sits on the surface while the water underneath quietly leaves through sun, sweat and air-conditioning.

The answer is water-light layers rather than rich ones. The Glow Replenishing Rice Milk is a milky toner built on rice bran water, the ingredient Korean routines have trusted for centuries. It puts water back, softens that tight after-cleansing feeling, and leaves a faint glow with no film. Press it in with your hands, and on thirsty days use two thin layers instead of one thick one.

Step three: one serum that earns its place

Summer is not the season for a five-serum evening. Pick one light formula with a calming job and let it work.

Mine is the Glow Serum Propolis + Niacinamide: around 60 percent propolis extract, the resin bees make and one of skincare's oldest soothing ingredients, alongside niacinamide at two percent, the concentration studied for helping regulate sebum. The texture has a honeyed slip that disappears as it settles. It calms the redness that heat and sun leave behind, supports the barrier, and keeps the glow on the healthy side of shiny.

Step four: the sunscreen that makes daily possible

The one step summer absolutely will not forgive you for skipping. UV is doing most of the visible damage this season, and UVA does it every daylight hour, cloudy or not. I made the full argument in why Korean sunscreens feel nothing like yours; the short version is that protection you enjoy is protection you actually wear.

The Relief Sun Rice + Biotics SPF 50+ PA++++ finishes like a light moisturizer, with no cast, no sting and no protest when you reapply in the afternoon. For pool and beach days, switch to a water-resistant formula. For the daily version of summer, the commute, the terrace, the desk by the window, this is the one.

What to leave out until September

This is the part that costs nothing and does the most.

Daily exfoliating acids can take the season off. Acids make skin measurably more sensitive to UV for days after use, which is why regulators require sun warnings on them. Once a week, gently, is plenty; pausing entirely is also fine.

New strong actives can wait. Peak UV season is a maintenance season, not a renovation season. If you already use a retinoid, keep it at night, lower the frequency if irritation appears, and be strict about the sunscreen. If you were planning to start one, autumn will treat you better.

The heavy cream can rest. By day, toner, serum and sunscreen may be all your skin wants. At night, a light gel-cream seals everything in without the coat.

And the third cleanse stays off the menu. Twice a day is the ceiling, whatever the shine suggests at three in the afternoon.

The whole routine on one shelf

Four steps, four products: the Green Plum Refreshing Cleanser, the Glow Replenishing Rice Milk, the Glow Serum Propolis + Niacinamide and the Relief Sun Rice + Biotics. By coincidence more than design, all four come from Beauty of Joseon, which keeps the textures speaking the same language when you layer them. The whole morning takes well under two minutes.

Three questions I hear constantly

Do I still need a moisturizer in summer? It depends on your skin and the weather. Oily and combination skin in humid weather often does fine by day with toner, serum and sunscreen, with a light gel-cream at night. Drier skin keeps a light cream at both ends of the day. Let tightness be the signal, not habit.

Should oily skin skip hydration in summer? No, and this is the most common summer mistake. Dehydrated skin often looks and feels oilier, because the surface oil is all you notice while the water underneath is missing. Water-light hydration is how the balance comes back.

Can I keep using retinol and acids in summer? A retinoid, yes, with discipline: nights only, a moderate frequency, and sunscreen without exceptions. Daily exfoliating acids are worth cutting to weekly or pausing in peak UV months, since they raise sun sensitivity for days after each use.

Summer skin asks for less than the shelf suggests. A gentle cleanse, water instead of weight, one calming serum, and a sunscreen you never have to negotiate with. Healthy skin begins with balance, and balance, in July, weighs almost nothing.

That is the summer routine, brought to light.
